What Are the Benefits of Sedation Dentistry?
Sedation dentistry offers an array of benefits, including:
- A more relaxed and pleasant dental experience
- Significant reduction of nervousness, fear, and anxiety about the prospect of dental/periodontal care
- Easier treatment for patients with a sensitive gag reflex
- Minimization of discomfort from sensations created by certain sounds, lights, scents, or instrumentation
- Smoother recovery
Sedation techniques can be seamlessly integrated into a variety of treatments, from routine preventive care to more complex procedures such as dental implants or periodontal care for advanced gum disease, making the experience more accessible and less stressful for anxious patients.
IV Sedation
Dr. Haskell offers intravenous (IV) sedation for patients who request this option. IV sedation is an effective technique that can benefit patients who are undergoing complex and/or time-consuming procedures, and for those who have moderate to severe dental anxiety. Delivered directly into the bloodstream, IV sedation allows for precise control over the level of sedation to ensure a genuinely tailored experience based on the patient’s needs.
Under IV sedation, patients remain in a deeply relaxed state, often with little to no memory of the procedure after it has taken place. IV sedation is not designed to place one in a state of unconsciousness; however, it can help patients fall asleep during the treatment. They should be unaware of time passing and experience minimal discomfort. For IV sedation, vital signs will be continuously monitored to ensure patients’ safety and comfort throughout the process.
One of the advantages of IV sedation is its rapid onset, as the medication takes effect almost immediately. Additionally, the level of sedation can be adjusted in real-time, offering a customized and seamless experience. Patients often feel very calm and relaxed, making it easier to complete procedures efficiently.
It is important to note that IV sedation requires a brief recovery period as the effects wear off. Grogginess and drowsiness are common (but temporary) side effects of this technique, so patients should arrange for a loved one to bring them home after treatment.
Oral Conscious Sedation
Oral conscious sedation may be an option for patients who have mild to moderate dental anxiety. This technique involves taking a small pill before treatment, which should help patients feel relaxed during the procedure while remaining conscious and able to communicate with our staff. Dr. Haskell can talk about this option with you during your initial consultation to determine whether oral conscious sedation is best for your needs.
For individuals who are undergoing medically complex treatments and for those who suffer from extremely high levels of dental anxiety, Dr. Haskell can bring in additional anesthesia providers, if necessary. If you would like to learn more about our sedation dentistry
