Implant-supported overdentures, sometimes referred to as implant-retained dentures or implant-anchored dentures, can replace full rows of missing teeth with long-lasting results that feel and function like natural teeth. These “hybridized” treatments—a combination of both dental implants and custom denture appliances—can be particularly advantageous for patients who would like to replace several teeth but are looking to avoid the drawbacks associated with traditional dentures. Implant-supported overdentures blend the best of both worlds by using a select number of dental implants with a custom denture to provide a secure foundation of support, ultimately enabling patients to achieve comprehensive tooth restoration that enhances oral function, health, and aesthetics.

Our experienced periodontist in Scottsdale, Dr. Braydon Haskell, can help you restore your teeth and your self-confidence with implant-supported overdentures of exceptional quality and results that can improve your day-to-day life. The sections below offer a detailed look into the benefits of these procedures and what the treatment process involves. Who Is a Candidate for Implant-Supported Overdentures?

Ideal candidates for implant-supported overdentures are typically individuals who are missing all or most of their teeth on the upper dental arch, the lower dental arch, or both dental arches. Additionally, candidates should:

  • Have adequate jawbone density in specific areas of the mouth to support the dental implants. If this is not the case, a bone grafting procedure may be recommended to enhance jawbone strength.
  • Be in reasonably good overall health.
  • Be free of uncontrolled periodontal disease. Periodontal treatment may be necessary before an implant-supported overdentures procedure to sufficiently prepare patients who are suffering from gum disease.
  • Be non-smokers or willing to quit the habit several weeks before the procedure and continue to avoid any kind of tobacco use after the treatment is performed. Smoking, vaping, and the use of other tobacco products can have serious effects on the healing process, which can include an increased risk of infection and the possibility of implant failure.

During the consultation, Dr. Haskell will evaluate your needs and help you determine whether this procedure, a treatment such as All-on-4® implant bridges, or another restorative option is the best solution. If implant-supported overdentures are right for you, Dr. Haskell can develop a customized treatment plan and go over all of the details with you so you will know what to expect from the treatment process.

What Is Recovery Like After Implant-Supported Overdentures?

The particulars of the recovery process after an implant-supported overdenture procedure can vary among individual patients; however, most will experience some degree of tenderness and swelling. These common side effects should dissipate as the treatment areas heal. For a brief period of time after treatment, patients should stick to soft foods of moderate temperatures to reduce the potential for discomfort during the healing process or damage to the treatment sites. Dr. Haskell will provide you with a detailed list of post-treatment guidelines that can help you achieve a safe and effective recovery.

It is important to remember that osseointegration—the fusion of the implants to the jawbone—is part of the healing process and will take at least a few months to fully complete. Dr. Haskell will schedule follow-up appointments to evaluate your progress and ensure the process is progressing as efficiently as possible.
