All-on-4 implant dentures offer a life-changing solution for individuals who have several missing teeth on one or both dental arches. Unlike traditional dentures, the custom dentures used for All-on-4 are secured to the jawbone using four strategically placed dental implants to provide virtually unmatched stability and comfort. In a way, All-on-4 can be considered an “implant bridge”—these dentures are not designed to be placed in the morning and removed at night. In fact, All-on-4 is fixed into place using the four dental implants as a stable support foundation. Dr. Braydon Haskell, our skilled periodontist, has helped many individuals improve their day-to-day lives and enhance the appearance of their smile with these advanced solutions for missing teeth replacement.
Who Is a Candidate for All-on-4 Implant Dentures?
Good candidates for All-on-4 implant dentures are typically patients who have lost most or all of their teeth on one or both dental arches. Individuals for whom this procedure may be recommended include those who:
- Are dissatisfied with their current dentures or would like to avoid traditional, removable dentures for teeth replacement.
- Have sufficient jawbone density in particular areas of the mouth to support the dental implants. Patients who do not meet this requirement may be advised to undergo a bone grafting procedure to enhance jawbone density.
- Are in good periodontal health. Those who have active gum disease can often improve their eligibility for this procedure if they have the condition treated beforehand.
- Are not currently suffering from certain general health conditions. Individuals who have controlled health conditions may qualify, but uncontrolled conditions such as diabetes or others may affect candidacy until medical clearance is given.
Dr. Haskell will perform a thorough evaluation to determine whether All-on-4, another type of implant-supported denture procedure, or a different solution entirely is the best choice for your needs.
What Does the All-on-4 Procedure Involve?
The All-on-4 procedure begins with a comprehensive consultation. Dr. Haskell will take a series of high-definition x-ray images to produce a detailed surgical plan for guided implant placement. With technology such as CBCT (Cone Beam Computed Tomography) digital imaging systems, Dr. Haskell can enhance the potential for accurate implant placement and the best possible fit for the custom denture appliance. On the day of surgery, four implants will be inserted into the gums on the dental arch where the teeth are being replaced, with two positioned at an angle to maximize contact with the jawbone. Temporary dentures are typically attached the same day, allowing patients to leave with a functional smile. Over the next few months, the implants fuse with the jawbone in a process called osseointegration. Once healing is complete, Dr. Haskell will attach a permanent, custom-made denture to the implants. The procedure is minimally-invasive compared to traditional full-mouth implants, typically resulting in shorter surgery and recovery times.
In some cases, patients may need a variation of this treatment called All-on-6, which places six dental implants instead of four in order to provide additional support for the custom denture. Dr. Haskell will recommend the option that can produce the most effective results once you are evaluated during the consultation.
“Dr Haskell is amazing. He makes sure you are at ease every step of the way and his staff goes above and beyond. If I could give more than 5 stars I would”
What Is Recovery Like After All-on-4 Treatment?
Most patients experience mild swelling and discomfort for a few days after the All-on-4 procedure, which can often be well-controlled with over-the-counter pain medication. Soft foods are recommended for the first week, gradually transitioning to a normal diet as the healing progresses. Good oral hygiene is crucial during recovery to prevent infection and ensure proper healing. Regular follow-up appointments with Dr. Haskell will help monitor progress and address any concerns. While temporary dentures provide immediate functionality, it is important to follow Dr. Haskell’s guidelines to protect the implants until they fully integrate with the jawbone. Once this has occurred, the permanent denture (or “implant bridge”) will be securely affixed to the implants for long-term, natural-looking teeth replacement. Again, since the All-on-4 denture is fixed to the implants, you will be able to brush and floss the denture just like you would with your original teeth.
